Holley Chant, corporate sustainability director at international consultancy Keo, refuses to buy LEED-certified products. “As soon as someone says they’re LEED certified, I make sure they’re ruled out completely,” she says. “LEED does not certify products.”

LEED rates building, not the products used to make them. “People calling me to say their products are LEED certified show how little they know about LEED,” Chant says in a ConstructionWeekOnline report.

What suppliers may mean when they cite LEED certification for their products is that those products can help a construction project gain LEED credits, says David Guilabert Ortuno, planning director at building materials supplier Cemex, in the report.
