A 4-kilowatt solar-energy array at a home in Memphis, TN, marks the second residence in the area participating in Generation Partners, a Tennessee Valley Authority program available to Memphis Light, Gas and Water customers. Those who sign up to install renewable-energy generation gear sell the green power back to TVA, with credits applied to their monthly electric bill. All of the power generated at the home goes to the grid, according to the utility, and is purchased by TVA at a premium of $0.12 per kilowatt-hour. This model contrasts with the more often discussed arrangement in which the property owner consumes solar power on-site and sells its excess to the grid.

Chicago’s Green Permit Program for building design, construction and renovation has been launched to provide the homeowners, building owners and developers with incentives to build greener buildings. The program features a streamlined permit process--less than 30 days--for projects that promise to maximize indoor air quality and conserve energy and resources, according to a press report. Projects using such renewable-energy technologies as passive solar, photovoltaics, wind, biomass, geothermal, and small hydroelectric qualify.

Ontility boasts a multimillion dollar inventory and some 150 brand names in the renewable energy, energy efficiency and weatherization market, according to an announcement.

A solar-powered lawn mower displayed recently at a fair in Knoxville, Tennessee, is a retrofitted General Electric model from the 1970s, says a local press report. The mower belongs to RetroMow, a co-op that makes available to members alternative-energy-powered tractors and mowers for garden tilling and lawn maintenance.
To make energy efficiency “a way of life” in California, the California Public Utilities Commission approved an energy-efficiency budget of $3.1 billion for utilities, according to an announcement. The approval includes the new California Statewide Program for Residential Energy Efficiency, CalSPREE, a residential retrofit program which has a goal of reducing energy consumption by 20% for 130,000 California homes by 2012. An Internet portal will let consumers access tools to reduce energy use.
