We live in a 170+-year-old New England farmhouse, as rich in character and history as it is in leaks: out goes the heat, in comes the cold. Or vice versa.

Like a lot of Massachusetts homeowners, I’m only marginally equipped to undertake home repair and retrofit projects that will improve energy efficiency.

But I heard a rallying cry at the annual BuildingEnergy conference of the Northeast Sustainable Energy Association: “It’s time for New Englanders to stop shivering in the dark an do something about it!”

Moved to action, and motivated by rapidly rising energy costs, GreenMeNow.com and its GreenRetros newsletter were born to help homeowners and business owners like me tackle projects—sometimes with and sometimes without expert help—that lessen the impact of my home and my family’s lifestyle on the environment.

The emphasis here—and what separates us from other sites with similar goals—is that the projects remain within the means of average homeowners and small business owners. They aren’t novelties or high-end renovations for the rich (although those are ok if you’re rich), but rather projects that can be undertaken for the most part without the need for a second mortgage, and that will ultimately save you money while being considerate to the environment.
